As we hold a remembrance of the 30th anniversary of the H9N9X tragedy, we have invited local artists to provide their reactions through their creativity. Their works explore the time before the event, during, and it's aftermath. We also celebrate our diversity of our town, with the art of both human-avians and humans. Featuring works by CJ Basker, Danielle Braxton, Maria Schultz, and many more. Here are a few selected pieces, come by the museum to see the full exhibit.
The museum was established in 1975, with funds from Gering Coal Works, to educate and celebrate our local history. After the mine closed in 1990, we established a partnership with Northberg College to keep the museum growing. Today the museum is funded by the township and private donations. We are housed in the historic Braxton house, the home of the original owner of the Gering Coal Works, Charles Braxton, who established his business here in 1919. At that time, Gering was small village, nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, that had been settled by Dutch and German immigrant farmers in the 1880s.
Museum admission is free. Donations always welcome.
Except for major holidays, the museum is open 11am-6pm, March-October, 1pm-5pm, November-February.
Our address is: 321 Main Street, Gering, MD, 21532
